In today’s post, we’ll review a few ways you can enjoy long-lasting roses, and we will also highlight a few unconventional ways that may prove beneficial in extending the life of your arrangement. Care Tips for Long-Lasting Roses

With the following four tips, you can keep your special delivery looking bright and perky for days.

Tip #1: Maintain Clean Water

Rose stems contain thousands of tiny capillaries that enable them to absorb water and nutrients to maintain their beautiful appearance. If the water in your vase contains dirt, debris, bacteria, or other contaminants, these capillaries could become clogged, preventing the rose from deriving the nutrients it needs from the water. To prevent this, be sure to change the water in the vase frequently, cleaning the vase and rinsing it thoroughly before use.

Tip #2: Prune Properly

When preparing the roses to be placed in their vase, it is important to trim the ends of the stems with a sharp knife or pruners. This will allow maximum water flow to the capillaries. While many people believe that using scissors is the easiest way to accomplish the task, a dull pair can pinch the stem rather than cutting it cleanly, which can damage or close off the capillaries. This can affect water intake. Every few days, remove any wilted leaves from the stem and cut a bit more of the length off to encourage maximum absorption.

Tip #3: Location is Everything

To ensure your roses maintain their full blooms for as long as possible, choose your display location carefully. Roses should be stored in a cool, dry place that is not exposed to drafts or temperature fluctuations. Although they look lovely in front of a picture window, roses should not be exposed to direct sunlight, nor should they be placed next to a basket of fruit. Fresh fruit can release gases that can reduce the longevity of your arrangement.

Tip #4: Feed With Care

Many luxury flower arrangements will come with a small packet of flower food. Unfortunately, many recipients will make the mistake of pouring the entire package of food into the vase as they are preparing their flowers for display. Take care to read the instructions on the package carefully for proper dilution. Too much food in the water can clog those sensitive capillaries we discussed earlier, resulting in a bouquet that wilts sooner than it should.
